Building the Ford Interceptor Concept

USA Today got a sneak peek at the building process of the Ford Interceptor concept, which we first got word of Sunday night, and delivers an interesting look at the preparation of a car show concept. Cars like the Interceptor are usually hand-built, often with just a clay model as a guideline.

The best part of the USA Today story is the revelation that Mazda’s Nagare concept car shown in Los Angeles in November was damaged during transport to the show and was fixed minutes before its public unveiling.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: Nissan Rogue

Nissan joins the compact SUV market in the U.S. with its new Rogue seen here. The stylish little SUV will compete directly against the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 and will have available all-wheel drive. It’s powered by a 175 hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder mated to a CVT transmission. A set of shift paddles on the steering wheel is optional, but we don’t see this as being a sports-oriented vehicle. It more aptly will fill the role as a compact hauler of people and their stuff with some style and high quality interior finishes, if it’s anything like the latest Sentra.

Stability control, traction control, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, front and rear curtain airbags and active head restraints are all standard. Nissan says the Rogue will go on sale in September 2007. Expect pricing to start around $20,000 with fully loaded models reaching the high $20,000 range.

Next-Generation Mini Cooper Makes U.S. Debut at Detroit Auto Show

Europe got a taste of the all-new Mini Cooper last month in Paris, but it will be more than two months before anyone on U.S. soil gets a first-hand look at the familiar-looking Cooper redesign. Word came today that Mini would use the setting of the Detroit auto show in early January to debut the next-generation Mini to the U.S., instead of the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show in late November. That’s fairly surprising, given the new Cooper is basically ready to roll and has already made its global debut.

Update: There will be a new concept of the next generation Lancer Evolution ...

Word just came from the North American International Auto Show that Mitsubishi will debut three new models at the 2007 show in Detroit in early January. Already confirmed to make its first public appearance is the Lancer sedan. The considerably redesigned Lancer was one of Mitsubishi’s bread and butter vehicles, but it has aged greatly with only the high-performance Lancer Evolution maintaining a hold on the market. Shown here is the Concept X, a take on the next Evolution model. Expect the more mainstream sedan to have less aggressive front and rear ends, but many of the lines and the overall design itself will most likely find their way to the base Lancer.

As for the other two models, we’re not sure what to expect, but there could be a new Montero full-size SUV — a European version of which is debuting in Paris this week — or even a new Galant sedan. Following today’s news, it sure seems like the 2006 - 07 car show season is in full swing. We’ll keep you updated with the latest news as it comes in.

Update: There will be a new concept of the next generation Lancer Evolution debuting alongside the production Lancer base sedan at the Detroit auto show. The third vehicle will be another concept but Mitsubishi is keeping its identity a secret for now.
