Toyota Developing a Prius Coupe Dubbed the MR2 to Compete with the Honda CR-Z?

toyota_ft_hs_concept_new.jpg
According to Auto Express the once loved MR2 is making a comeback, but not as the small mid-engined roadster like the last generation. Instead Toyota is going to apply the MR2 name to a new performance hybrid that would be similar to the upcoming Honda CR-Z.

The small coupe would feature rear-wheel-drive, a paddleshift gearbox and a specially developed version of the Prius’s hybrid powertrain.

Toyota executive vice president Masatami Takimoto recently told Auto Express: “We are aware of the fondness with which the MR2 is held in the UK and Europe, and are developing a small hybrid sports car.

“We have set a tough price point (expected to be around £20,000), as it will be easier to sell if it is affordable. It has to be fun to drive, too, which means the hybrid set-up must be different to the Prius’s, with greater responsiveness.”

It's also rumored that the revived MR2 hybrid will draw styling cues from the Toyota FT-HS sports car concept.

Musical Sebastiens: Toro Rosso confirms Buemi for 2009

With Sebastian Vettel moving up to the Red Bull senior squad to fill the vacancy left by David Coulthard's, the motor racing community has been held in suspense, waiting for the junior Scuderia Toro Rosso team to announce their drivers for 2009. The team has now confirmed that 20-year-old Swiss driver Sebastien Buemi - part of Red Bull's driver development program, who drove in GP2 last season while acting as test driver for Red Bull Racing - will take Vettel's seat for the coming season. Buemi, whose cousin Natacha Gachnang is to headline the new Formula 2 series, actually signed before the holidays, but the news wasn't revealed until recently.

The last remaining piece of the puzzle, however, remains who will drive alongside Buemi in the new season. With the exception of the former Honda team, the second Toro Rosso seat is the only one left unconfirmed. Incumbent Sebastien Bourdais and veteran Takuma Sato are both reportedly in the running, but STR is apparently in no rush to decide, leaving the filing deadline on the Thursday before the season opener in Australia as their only parameter.

I’ve been watching the builds that come out of Vivid Racing for a few years now, and when Dan and crew picked up this 997 Turbo I knew we were in for a treat. I loved the original color since day one, but with the recent body wrap in flat blue, I’m doing backflips! How about you? What color do you like on VividRacing’s 997 Turbo?
