Dealership can't sell trucks, sells scooters instead

The sky-high price of gas has hit some dealerships pretty hard. A perfect example of this is Moody Chevrolet in River Falls, Wisconsin which last sold a pick up truck sometime in February. While their truck inventory sits outside and waits patiently for new homes, the Moody brothers still need to sell something and that something now happens to be scooters. They might not have the profit margin of a Tahoe or an Avalanche but they don't cost nearly as much to stock either. They have sold 20 of the two-wheeled econo-cycles so far this year and suspect they could sell a lot more if they could only get their hands on them. Apparently, the scooter supply is as short as the demand for trucks is, well, non-existent.

According to the report from KARE11 there is one scooter on the premises that's not for sale. It's the red one that Mike Moody uses to get back and forth with while his Suburban sits in a garage at home. Because of its 45 mpg disadvantage, it only gets to come out and play when it's raining. Mike seems to have a good attitude about the situation though saying, "[It's] another mode of transportation and that's the business that we're in."

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Promo Video

0802_24_z2009_lamborghini_gallardo_lp560-4profile_view.jpg

In the video Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Lamborghini says “The new Gallardo LP560-4 is a significantly enhanced version of what was already an extreme car.” “With an even more sharply defined character, the new Gallardo LP560-4 is also innately elegant and sensuous: the expression of an uncompromising lifestyle.”

So why is it called the LP560-4 ? The new car’s name follows Lamborghini tradition and is in a similar format to that of its big brother, the Murcielago LP640. LP stands for Longitudinale Posteriore, the position of the engine - longitudinally mid-mounted 560 horsepower, and Lamborghini chose to insert the “-4” as a reminder that the Gallardo is a full-time four-wheel-drive machine.

Usain Bolt now wears the mantle of Fastest Man Alive having set world records in the 100 and 200 meter sprints at last summer's Olympics in Beijing. Fitting then that he was placed in one of the fastest cars in the world recently to take a stroll around one of the richest places in the world: Monaco. In the principality for the IAAF awards, Bolt was given the keys to drive an F430 along portions of the F1 circuit in the city. You can check out the gallery of high-res photos below while we wait for word on if he set any world speed records in the process.

Car News TV Reviews the Porsche Panamera

Since the first spy photos were leaked, I’ve been saying I think Porsche’s Panamera looks pretty awful. And while I don’t think the finished product is totally hideous, I think Stuttgart fell well short of attractive with the design of it’s first four-door. What do I find hideous? The way that some media outlets title something a “car review,” and then deliver an infomercial. There’s nothing even remotely critical of the vehicle in Car News TV’s “review” of the new Porsche—not even the almost obligatory “while some purists might not like the idea of a Porsche sedan…”—and I swear I recognize the narrator’s voice from a detergent spot or something. I can just hear her saying “and just look at what it does to grass-stains!” That said, there are still some good shots of the Panamera in action here.

Commenter Of The Day: Henry The Fowler Edition [Commenter Of The Day]

King Henry the First of Germany was, due to his strong civic and military leadership, the first ruler to bring all the formerly separated portions of Germany together into one kingdom. Some say he gets his name from the fact that, when told he had ascended to leadership, he was in the middle of readying birds for the hunt (it's a good thing he wasn't told while intimate with Mrs. Henry The Fowler or he'd be Henry The Fouler of Women). Among his most brilliant strokes was to offer the Magyars, who had been beating up on the German kingdoms for some time, a large tribute in order to secure a truce. Henry used this time to secure his country and build a large army and, at the Synod of Erfurt, decided to end payment. This led to an attack by the Magyars who were repelled after learning, a little too late, what Henry had been up to. This time it is not the Hungarians, but rather the Japanese who are encroaching on German territory, and we have Mr.Choppers to thank for explaining the history behind it.

I always thought that the rivalry started at the 932 AD synod of Erfurt, when the fathers decided to change from a monastic to a diocesan car company structure. Duke Ferdinand of Stuttgart famously struck out on his own, and ever since there has been a rift in the automotive world. Only today, however, has it come to the surface for us laymen to see.

Good work, James Burke.

Animals in Cars—for Fun and Profit

I’ve had some unkind things to say in the past about the Kia Soul, at least in the appearance department. But they have won my soul with their new giant hamster commercial. Apparently this takes off on an older series they did in the ‘90s. Anyhow, these critters are movin’ and shakin’ to the beat while their brothers go round and round in their wheels.

Putting animals in cars and having them do silly things has been a stock in trade for advertisers, going back at least to AMC’s Noah’s Ark commercial in 1967.

I saw one recently with two camels in a car with their heads out the windows, bleating. This wasn’t an ad; it was just funny.

A milestone in the genre was achieved a few years ago by a dealership (Suburban Car Group), and the series was called “Trunk Monkey.” Here’s one of them.

Enjoy, and Happy Friday!

ExxonMobil Posts Largest Profit In US History, Makes $1,865.69 A Second [News]

ExxonMobil has announced third-quarter profits of $14.83 billion, the largest profit ever recorded in US history. That number is up from the company's last record profit — in the second quarter — of only $11.68 billion. Let's put this into perspective; ExxonMobil could buy every Ferrari Enzo ever built, every 38 hours, and they'd still be profitable. Obviously this means additional tax incentives are needed to hasten oil exploration off the coastal shelf, to develop oil shale fields that'll be useless when a barrel of crude costs less than a movie ticket, and to create techniques to mine the souls of treehuggers for industrial uses. How Hot is Your Car?

1991hondaaccord

Fewer cars were stolen in 2005 than in 2004 — 2,625 fewer — but that statistic won’t provide solace to the other 1,235,226 U.S. car owners who were robbed last year. How likely is your car to account for one of these numbers next year? The National Insurance Crime Bureau just released its top 10 list of most-stolen cars, which you can read below. Car thefts rose in the Midwest and the West, while they decreased in the Northeast and South. Surprisingly, only 62.1% of the stolen vehicles were recovered.

[Source: The National Insurance Crime Bureau]

For 2005, the most-stolen vehicles in the nation were:

  1.  1991 Honda Accord
  2.  1995 Honda Civic
  3.  1989 Toyota Camry
  4.  1994 Dodge Caravan
  5.  1994 Nissan Sentra
  6.  1997 Ford F-150
  7.  1990 Acura Integra
  8.  1986 Toyota Pickup
  9.  1993 Saturn SL
10.  2004 Dodge Ram Pickup

[Video] Caparo builds the world’s fastest police car

banner21.jpg

This Caparo T1 decked in police livery is just a concept vehicle developed by the UK’s Met Police and Caparo for the MPH ’07 show set for this weekend in London.

banner4.jpg

Dubbed the Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV), the new concept is intended as a deterrent to anyone who thinks they can get away with speeding. If you’re unfamiliar with Caparo’s upcoming supercar all you need to know is that it’s essentially the closest thing to a road legal Formula One car.

It’s ‘8th wonder of the world’ 3.5L V8 engine develops 575bhp @ 10,500rpm and 310 lbft of torque at 9,000rpm. You can read the full details about this car in my post: The Caparo T1: An Engineer’s Dream Come True.

Keep in mind with this kind of power and rather lack of weight that its power to weight ratio is DOUBLE the Bugatti Veyron’s.

Full Size Photos

caparo_001.jpg caparo_003.jpg

On the latest episode of Top Gear, the Caparo T1 is described by Jeremy Clarkson as being possibly the scariest car ever made. With a 3.5L V8 screaming at 10,500rpm just inches from your head we tend to agree. Check out the video, it will give you a grin or two and find out for yourself why Jeremy Clarkson said “you can forget Enzo’s you can forget Koenigsegg, THIS IS IN A DIFFERENT LEAGUE!!!!”.

As seen in the Jeremy Clarkson video, this car is realistically meant for track use only and its definitely no Honda when it comes to quality. The floor came loose?? They recommend a full flame resistant body suit and helmet?? Naturally they didn’t want to get their ass-sued from Jeremy Clarkson/Top Gear/BBC in the event of a crash.

At 4:48 in this video a bug splats the top right corner of the camera!

Don’t think you’ll ever get a chance to own one, drive one or see one. This bitch costs $500,000 USD. (I am going to have to stop using $ USD and start using $ CAD because the American Dollar is worth less than my Loonie). Keep in mind it’s just a matter of time until we are all back using a GOLD Standard instead of this rediculous Fiat Currency system.
