The 2009 VW Scirocco

It’s a little disconcerting, at least to me that some of the best new vehicles never make it to the U.S.  This is particularly the case with affordable cars that would actually be accessible by American consumers; as opposed to the six-figure variety horded in the garages of Sultans.  That trend may continue, though let us hope not, with the new Volkswagon Scirocco.

About the same length as a Golf and as wide as a Passat, the Scirocco is built significantly lower to the ground.  The base model will likely get a newly designed 1.4-liter Twincharged four-cylinder from the Golf GT.  It produces between 140 and 170 horsepower, depending on tuning.  On the upper end is a turbocharged 2.0-liter like that can crank out roughly 230 horses.  A 2.0-liter diesel four will also probably be introduced.  Volkswagen has hinted at plans to build a Scirocco V6 “4Motion” designated car at some point that will be in the neighborhood of 280 horsepower.  The Scirocco gets wider tracks and a MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension with specific settings.  Reports are that the Scirocco may adopt some lightweight aluminum parts from the second-generation Audi TT.

After a 16 year absence, the design of the new Scirocco is a bit underwhelming in comparison to some of the highly aggressive concept vehicles that have emerged at various Autoshows in the years since it was out of production.  However, It is still looks solid and better than alot of other cars on the road.  Engineers have designed the full length sunroof that is available as an option to reflect 99 percent of UV radiation, and eliminate 97 percent of the heat generated.  Standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, height adjustable driver and front passenger seats and steering wheel, leather parking brake grip, sport seats, split folding rear seats, power windows, air conditioning, ESP, braking assistant, six airbags, speed-dependent power steering, and of course a sport chassis.

Base price will be in the neighborhood of $28,000, rising up exponentially with options.  Even though sales will be limited to 25,000 a year, U.S. Executives have said they do not want the Scirocco for fear that it would lower GTI sales.  The final say will be made by the head honchos in Germany.
