Detroit 2009: Mercedes-Benz Concept BlueZero previews next-gen B-Class

At an off-site reception held tonight ahead of tomorrow's opening of the Detroit Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz showed off its new Concept BlueZero. The car is both an example of clean technology and a preview of the styling for the next generation Mercedes B-Class. Like the current A and B class models, this concept uses a sandwich floor design and adds a modular powertrain system. The car is envisioned with three powertrain options depending on the range requirements. The BlueZero E-Cell uses a 35 kWh lithium ion battery pack to provide a 120-mile range, while the BlueZero F-Cell variant gets a 90 kW hydrogen fuel cell for a 240-mile range. The efficiency of the fuel cell version is rated at the equivalent of 81 mpg (US).

The third flavor is the E-Cell Plus and adds a 67-hp three-cylinder engine from the Smart ForTwo mounted in the rear between the sandwich floor layers where the spare tire would normally go. The ER-EV variant cuts the battery size in half as well as the electric-only range. The range extender, however, bumps the total range to 360 miles.

Mercedes also announced that it will begin low-volume series production of the fuel cell B-Class later this year and follow that with low volume series production of a battery electric vehicle in 2010.

Cabrio Pickup Leisure Car! First Kia Soulster photo, info leaked

The best description of the Kia Soulster comes via a Google translation of Automarket.ro's post on it: Cabrio pick-up leisure car. Hey, works for us. What we appear to have in the Soulster is a cool-looking compact, four-seater (note that headrest behind the B-pillar) that's sort of in the vein of the late Isuzu Amigo. The windshield's chopped, the looks are a blend of Fisher-Price cute and Tonka Truck rugged, and overall, it works. A rollbar adds a hint of style and ostensibly helps keep everyone's noggins in one piece should the Soulster become inverted. Kiamino? Soulster Pickup? If Kia has the stones to actually produce something this fun-looking, they might just have a hit on their hands. We'll have full coverage from Motown starting this weekend. Thanks for the tip, Mircea.

2010 Mercedes E-Class Leaked Ahead Of Detroit [2010 Mercedes E-Class]

Set to be officially revealed at next month's Detroit Auto Show, a few more shots of the new 2010 Mercedes E-Class sedan have already found their way onto the internet.

We were given a preview of the new E-Class front end design at the 2008 Paris Motor Show with the ConceptFASCINATION design study, though we doubt we’ll ever see a two-door hatchback version of this car. The 2010 Mercedes E-Class is expected to be loaded with a combination of six- and eight-cylinder motors in the US, but Mercedes may decide to bring the fuel efficient diesel supercharged four-cylinder that’s sold in Europe in the E200 Kompressor. As it usually goes, a performance AMG model will follow packing a mighty, high-horsepower V8. We’ll keep you up-to-date as more information reveals itself.

Detroit Auto Show 2008: Audi R8 V12 TDI

Audi R8 V12 TDI

Audi unveiled the new R8. They made an upgrade to the 6.0-liter diesel engine, the R8 V12 TDI sports car engine is the new one. The engine is not exactly the same as the race one, the bank angle has been decreased from 90 degrees to 60 degrees. With 500 hp and 738 lb-ft torque, the ultramodern engine reaches 62mph in 4.2 seconds and has a maximum speed of 186mph. The new engine is 2014 EuroVI compatible. Although the engine is one of the best, the design shouldn’t be ignored. Just look at this car!
