Rental fleet sales down last year, 2009 will be worse

Last summer, it was the Detroit Three that were restraining themselves from dumping cars into the gaping maw of fleet sales just to boost the bottom line. Turns out they had some help with that discipline: Due to last year's events, rental car fleets shrunk by 400,000 units from 2007 to 2008. As we begin 2009, rental car companies have declared they will be trimming their fleet orders and curbing the number of vehicles they keep on hand even further.

Rental car companies have been thrown under a number of buses as of late. They can't borrow money to finance purchases; the recession has hammered the travel industry; wholesale used vehicle prices are falling (making rental car fleets less valuable); and besides that, car dealers can't get the money to buy the retired rental cars anyway, which subtracts yet another revenue stream.

Rental companies have been good for something like 15% of sales from General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. But not this year: Enterprise, which also buys for National and Alamo, will buy half the number of cars it did last year, and they'll keep those cars a couple of months longer. Hertz, Dollar, and Thrifty also said they will buy fewer cars and work them longer. The automakers have doubled incentives to encourage sales, but there are simply no teeth left in the rental business with which to bite.

Thus, don't be surprised to find a few more stains on the seats and a few more miles on the clock the next time you find yourself at the wheel of a rental car.

Safety First: Daimler reportedly passes on buying Volvo

Volvo and Mercedes-Benz have been known for decades as automotive safety pioneers, sharing between them the bulk of new innovations in the field. These days, however, automakers are as as concerned about their financial security as they are with occupant safety. With the latter in mind, reports indicate that Mercedes parent company Daimler has decided against buying Volvo from Ford.

Amidst slumping sales and a troubled future, reports surfaced a month ago that Ford was looking for a buyer for the last remnant of its ill-fated Premier Auto Group, after Land Rover, Jaguar and Aston Martin were all sold off to Asian investors. Ford bought the Swedish automaker from the Volvo group for $6.45 billion back in 1999, and is looking to offload it for $6 billion today. Unfortunately for FoMoCo, nobody seems to have the cash. The Volvo group has rejected the possibility of buying its car division back, the Swedish government isn't interested, BMW reportedly considered the prospect but ultimately rejected it, and now Daimler, which has had its fill of acquisition deals with Detroit, has passed as well. At this point, Chinese automakers like Shanghai (SAIC) and Geely, as well as Korean automaker Hyundai seem like the only tenable prospective buyers left.

Today In History: The Ford Thunderbird Takes Flight

On August 20, 1962, the first Ford Thunderbird was produced. Designed to serve as a prototype, the Ford Thunderbird was Ford’s rapid-fire response to the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette. When it finally rolled into the commercial market in 1955, the Ford Thunderbird quickly outsold the Corvette. With a 292 V8 193-hp engine, the T-bird was unlike anything Ford had ever produced before. The early T-birds were all fiberglass hard-top convertibles with a few canvas-tops being offered in ‘56 models. After it became apparent that Ford had stumbled upon a guaranteed formula for success, engineers began to tinker with the design. Ultimately, the Ford Thunderbird lasted for 12 successful generations and sold approximately 4.2 million units. Although Ford officially pulled the plug on T-bird production in 1997, limited edition ”Retro Birds” were produced from 2002-2005. So celebrated was the brief comeback, the 2003 Thunderbird earned a coveted spot in the James Bond film “Die Another Day.”

New big player in the Auto industry, Microsoft

As Detroit auto executives are crying into their martinis over a business lunch and are worrying about their future, ever decreasing vehicle sales, and why did they think it was a good idea to build lots of huge SUV’s. Execs over at Microsoft are thrilled at the prospect of moving into the car business in a big way.

The problem for auto companies is that designing a brand new vehicle takes years and designing a brand new super fuel efficient engine is going to take forever. And while they wait for these new developments the price of gas is crippling sales.

Their only hope is to alter their vehicles to make them stand out from the crowd, to give new and exiting options that will keep the publics interest. But these options also take years to bring into production. Unless they are computer related tech options for entertainment, information and fuel saving.

Now who would be good at that sort of thing? Well Microsoft see the writing on the Detroit executive bathroom wall and have decided to raise their investment in the auto sector by a third this year alone.

Microsoft wants its online services to be built to accommodate the needs of the auto industry. They are going to build up the auto software group in the coming months as part of its commitment in the automotive sector. The first thing they are rolling out is the so-called Windows Live Search for Devices (LS4D).

According to Microsoft’s Automotive Business Unit LS4D allows the manufacturers of navigation and other infotainment devices for the automotive industry, the integration of new services with online connectivity in their products.

Among other things it will link GPS with local data queries about for example shops or restaurants. LS4D can already be completely integrated within Windows Automotive software. It is a special package based on Windows Embedded for use in cars. In the near future the platform will be built directly into the operating system at the factory.

In the coming year, a new version of Microsoft software will be ready for use in the automobile market, with the aim of providing what Microsoft calls a “total solution” for onboard computing in vehicles.

Microsoft technology is already behind the infotainment systems in vehicles of different brands. Ford’s is known as Sync in the U.S which is available in many models including, Fords Edge, Explorer, Sport Trac, and the Mercury Milan and Sable. And Fiat’s range known as “Blue & Me” in Europe and South America. In addition, Microsoft has invested heavily in this seasons Formula 1 racing cars with new electronic computer generated engine control systems.

The profits could be huge even by Microsoft’s standards, there are nearly a billion vehicles on the world’s roads, and if they could put their devices into just 20% or even 10% of those automobiles the potential for making money from the auto business may be incredible.

Building the Ford Interceptor Concept

Interceptorinterior

USA Today got a sneak peek at the building process of the Ford Interceptor concept, which we first got word of Sunday night, and delivers an interesting look at the preparation of a car show concept. Cars like the Interceptor are usually hand-built, often with just a clay model as a guideline.

The best part of the USA Today story is the revelation that Mazda’s Nagare concept car shown in Los Angeles in November was damaged during transport to the show and was fixed minutes before its public unveiling.

Reader Review of the Week

Consreviews_1

It was pretty tough to pick a winner for our no-prize-attached Reader Review of the Week award this Halloween week. After sifting through dozens of new submissions, we thought we were being treated to tricks galore, especially after not one but two confused entries stated that the B in BMW stood for British, as in British Motor Works. We’re hoping they’re not the people responsible for BMW’s Wikipedia entry.

Luckily we received one treat in our search, from Thomas in Miami, Fla. Thomas just bought a new 2007 Ford Explorer and details why he made the switch from a Bavarian Motor Works 3 Series to Ford’s bread-and-butter SUV. Read the full review below, and if you really want to help us out please contribute a review of your own vehicle right here.

2007fordexplorer

"It took me a while to give up my BMW 325i for a large (at least to me) SUV, but after several weekend trips I'm glad I made the switch. Of course, going from being single (when I got the BMW) to having a significant other, her daughter, and two dogs may have something to do with my point of view.

“I knew going in that fuel economy must suffer, but I've only given up about 5 miles/gallon, which I find amazing when you consider the car is about 1,200 pounds heavier.

“I'm a believer in rear-wheel-drive, fully-independent-suspension vehicles, so I didn't give up anything there going from the BMW sports sedan to a midsize SUV.

“What amazed me more than anything was how quiet the new Ford Explorer is. It is an equal in quietness to the BMW 525i (which I had before the 325i) and better than the 325i.

“While it took me a long time to convert to SUV land (I'm always late on trends), I'm glad I waited until Ford got the Explorer right
