40 Cars Under 2500, The Way Things Used To Be

I was clearing my desk off today, my virtual desk. One client project was finally finished and I started doing some research for Ridelust when I stumbled upon this article.

40 Cars Under 2500

The article is on one of my favorite sites about saving money, or getting rich slowly. And it made me think how in a few generations we’ve moved into a society that is driven by bigger and better, faster, and shinier constantly pushing forward without thinking of the economical and societal effects.

30 years ago some folks thought we were headed towards a movement towards smaller cars. He was wrong, but a small and growing movement is stirring that shift again, and a more economical shift towards smarter cars and some of them come in small packages.

VIDEO: Four-Door Porsche Panamera, Officially Official! [Porsche Panamera GT]

This weekend we revealed the first photos of the Porsche Panamera, the German automaker's first four-door sedan. Now we've got the official press release from the new boys to the sedan block and now, even more excitingly below the jump, we're the first to reveal video of that big-rear end in action. Hit that jump for the hot rear action.

PORSCHE PRESENTS FIRST PHOTOS OF THE PANAMERA GRAN TURISMO Worldwide Debut in Spring 2009 ATLANTA

November 24, 2008 —- Three-quarters of a year prior to market launch, Porsche has released the first official photos the new Panamera. Porsche's unique four-seater was conceived and designed as a four-door grand touring sports car, combining numerous talents in typical Porsche style: sporting driving dynamics, a spacious interior, and the supreme comfort of a Gran Turismo. Joining the 911, Boxster and Cayman sports cars as well as the Cayenne SUV, the Panamera is Porsche's fourth model series.

The Panamera designers have succeeded in positioning it as a brand-new and truly different model while retaining the looks of a typical Porsche. Through its proportions, the Panamera stands out in its market segment: measuring 76 inches wide and 55.8 inches in height, it is wider and lower than comparable four-door models. The unmistakable GT silhouette is created by the car's overall length of 195.7 inches and short, sporting overhangs. In its styling and details, the Panamera follows the design philosophy refined over decades on the 911 and successfully implemented on the Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne. Pure Porsche DNA and comfort for four.

Through its design language, the Panamera establishes a new segment. The symbiosis of sports car DNA derived from the looks of a coupe, the unique interpretation of the classical saloon body and the benefits of a variable space concept give the new Porsche a truly unmistakable appearance. For instance, Panamera comes with strongly contoured air intakes instead of a conventional radiator grille. Striking wheel arches and the long and sleek engine compartment, with the distinctly contoured wings flanking the flat front lid, create the typical 911 "landscape" Porsche customers have appreciated for over 45 years. V-shaped seams along the hood and a rear window that tapers like an arrow to the rear also are characteristic of a sports car. Muscular shoulders over the rear wheels, the sweep of the coupe-like roofline and visible tailpipes again bear the thoroughbred Porsche DNA. An elegant roof arch extends over the generous interior.

Thanks to the unique and sporting architecture of the interior, the car's occupants are able to experience a cockpit-like atmosphere from all four seats. All occupants enjoy supreme comfort in both the front seats and the two contoured rear seats. The luggage compartment easily takes all passengers' luggage; the Panamera's variable space concept with folding rear backrests enables driver and passengers to adjust the luggage space to individual requirements. Finally, the coupe tailgate in the sporting rear end combines everyday usability with stylish elegance. Panamera built in Leipzig; powerful engines hail from Zuffenhausen Porsche has developed powerful and up-to-date engines for the Panamera, reflecting the qualities typical of the brand; the V-engines come with six and eight cylinders and output ranges from 300 to 500 horsepower. Some engines use turbocharging technology and Direct Fuel Injection, making them both fuel-efficient and very powerful. Power flows to the wheels through either a manual six- speed gearbox or Porsche's seven-speed PDK Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, or Double-Clutch Gearbox.

In addition to rear-wheel drive, the top version of the Panamera comes with even more sophisticated all-wheel drive, available on other models as an option. Porsche also is preparing a fuel-efficient version of the Panamera with hybrid drive. Further details on engines, transmissions, performance, prices and equipment will be disclosed next spring.

The Porsche Panamera will be built at Porsche's Leipzig plant, where a 237,000-square-foot production hall and a logistics center currently are under construction. While the Panamera engines are built at Porsche's main plant in Zuffenhausen, painted bodyshells will be supplied by Volkswagen's Hanover plant. The Leipzig plant will then assemble the Panamera for final delivery, with an annual sales target of about 20,000 units. Porsche is once again cooperating with German suppliers, with some 70 percent of the car's components being created in Germany.

The Panamera will make its world debut in spring 2009 and the first models will be at U.S dealers in the fall of next year. Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA) is based in Atlanta, Ga., is the exclusive importer of Porsche sports cars and sport utility vehicles for the United States. It is a wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, PCNA employs approximately 250 people who provide Porsche vehicles, parts, service, marketing and training for its 202 dealers. The dealers, in turn, provide Porsche owners with best-in-class service. Throughout its 60-year history, Porsche has developed numerous technologies that have advanced vehicle performance, improved safety and spurred environmental innovations within the automotive industry. The company continues to celebrate its heritage by adding to its long list of motorsports victories dating back to its first 24 Hours of Le Mans class win in 1951. Today, with more than 28,000 victories, Porsche is recognized as the world's most successful marquee in sports car racing. PCNA, which imports the iconic 911 series, the Boxster and Cayman sports cars and the Cayenne sport utility vehicles for the United States, strives to maintain a standard of excellence, commitment and distinction synonymous with its brand. ###

Man Builds Audi R8 Super Car Out Of A Mercury Cougar [Custom Cars]

The Audi R8 is one of the most exclusive and beautiful supercars in the world, commanding auto-lust wherever it goes and wherever it's seen. But what if you want an R8 but don't have the $105,000+ to buy one yourself? You could go through the arduous process of designing and building the whole thing from the ground up in your basement, but that would take 17 years. Who has the time? Why not just design an approximation of the R8 around a 2001 Mercury Cougar, fabricate it from fiberglass, and call it the ReplicaAudiR8?

Here's the thing about the ReplicaAudiR8 — we don't hate it. For being a front-engine, front-wheel-drive approximation of a mid-engined all-wheel-drive supercar it looks damn good. We find ourselves thinking it wouldn't be a terrible thing if an actual Audi looked like this. Sure some of the details need a little work, like the lack of inner fenders at the back, and an interior upgrade which goes beyond adding an "R8" badge to the steering wheel, but it's pretty slick looking. Lets take a look at the car side by side with its inspiration.

Let's get the first, and most obvious angle out of the way, the profile. Since the ReplicaAudiR8 is based on a front engine front wheel drive sporty hatchback, one would think the thing would look like a wreck from the side. Surprisingly though it's just not that bad. The sculpting works nicely and the car even integrates intake vents from the as-yet unrevealed Audi R8 V10. The lines running front to back are massaged a bit to camouflage the change in layout, but overall it's an impressive effort.

The rear makes the ReplicaAudiR8's lowly Cougar origins blatantly apparent with a much narrower track and a higher roofline. The rear vents are actually bigger on the Replica than on the real Audi, but it lacks the exhaust tips poking through the back bumper. The lower bumper is one of the few places on the car that's fairly awkward, but it's nothing compared to some of the stuff we've seen on Fiero specials.

The front three-quarter view is almost creepy in how much the cars look alike. If you didn't know better, you'd swear it was a Chinese rip-off and not a home-built replicar. The only dead giveaway is the treatment on the lower lip of the front bumper. We'll be honest here, we're split on which one actually looks better from this angle. Henkl and Udo will be miffed at us, but it's the truth.

The one area the ReplicaAudiR8 has nothing on the real R8 (aside from the engine, the transmission, the suspension, the wheels, the chassis etc.) is the interior. The stock Mercury Cougar interior remains largely untouched from the day the Ford line workers installed it. The addition of an "R8" badge to the wheel can't compete against the shiny stainless steel, Nav system, D-wheel and general awesomeness of the Audi R8 interior.

At the front end we see the proportions of the wide Audi is again interpreted pretty cleanly on the Cougar chassis. The intakes are again a bit deeper on the replicar, and that lower lip comes into a clearer focus. Take a note, the ReplicaAudiR8 gets thin-line fog lamps where the real Audi is lamp free.

After all that, here's the big kicker: You can buy one of these if you live in Spain. The car was built by Alberto Gavach Fuertes of Zaragoza, Spain, who has a website dedicated to the car. Don't go to the site unless you want to scream bloody murder at the terrible website design, but on it, Alberto outlines the details on the car and tells us the price on this beauty: 40,000€ or about $50,000. This of course makes us wonder how fast the four-ring fellas will be slapping Al with a cease and desist, but that's for him to worry about. [Replica Audi R8, NECO Forums]

Car And Driver Announces 10 Best For 2009 [Car And Drive 10Best]

The crazy kids over at Car And Driver announced their annual "10BEST" cars for 2009 and, would you believe, they went out on a limb and put the Honda Accord on the list. Having sampled the best sub-$71,000 offerings the editors ranked all cars on a 1-100 scale to determine the best vehicles for sale next year. The Accord and the BMW 3-series made the list for the 23rd and 18th time, respectively. Eight of the cars on the list have been there before and two are brand new to the Top 10. What was cut out of last year's crew above? What was added? You'll have to peak below to find out.

Car And Driver 2009 10BEST
• BMW 3-Series/M3

• Cadillac CTS

• Chevrolet Corvette

• Honda Accord

• Honda Fit

• Infiniti G37

• Jaguar XF

• Mazda MX-5

• Porsche Boxster/Cayman

• Volkswagen GTI

It looks like the Mazda3 and Chevy Malibu are out in favor of the Infiniti G37 and Jaguar XF. Sorry guys, better luck next year.

CAR AND DRIVER ANNOUNCES "10BEST" CARS FOR 2009
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Car and Driver magazine, the world's No. 1 automotive enthusiast publication, today announced its 27th annual list of "10Best" cars sold in America. The industry may be in a state of upheaval but, when selecting the world's most coveted automobiles, some things have managed to stay the same.

Car and Driver selected eight of ten repeat winners from a year ago, with several models appearing for the umpteenth time. General Motors claimed two spots, but imports once again dominate the list, which is featured in the January 2009 issue hitting newsstands in December.

Following are the 2009 Car and Driver 10Best winners (in alphabetical order), followed by the number of times each model has made the list:

• BMW 3-Series/M3 (18)

• Cadillac CTS (2)

• Chevrolet Corvette (15)

• Honda Accord (23)

• Honda Fit (3)

• Infiniti G37

• Jaguar XF

• Mazda MX-5 (10)

• Porsche Boxster/Cayman (10)

• Volkswagen GTI (4)

Newcomers to the 10Best list include the Infiniti G37 premium high performance sports sedan, which underwent extensive changes to enhance its performance and handling. Also joining the group for the first time is the Jaguar XF, hailed by many for its modern styling and beautiful lines that distinguish it in its category. And the Honda Fit that made the list this year is a redesigned version of the car that had been selected to the list twice previously.

For the second consecutive year, General Motors was the only American manufacturer to make the 10Best rankings, placing two vehicles on the list. The Cadillac CTS has made its mark among drivers of luxury sports sedans and is on the list for a second year in a row. The Chevrolet Corvette, continues its reign in the sports car category, selected for a 15th time.

Other venerable returnees include the Honda Accord, recognized for a record 23rd time, and the BMW 3-Series, making its appearance on the Car and Driver list for a record 18 consecutive years. The Porsche Boxster/Cayman and Mazda MX-5 are on the 10Best list for the tenth year each. Rounding out the winners is the Volkswagen GTI, honored for the fourth time.

"The industry is evolving, but some things stay the same, including the intense competition between domestic and foreign manufacturers making this contest tougher to judge every year," said Csaba Csere, editor-in-chief of Car and Driver.

A panel of 19 Car and Driver editors determined the winners by rating them on a scale of 1-100 with a focus on functional performance, driving satisfaction and value. Vehicles considered for the award must be available in the United States by January 2009 and priced below $71,000, or 2.5 times the average transaction price as of summer 2008. Winners from the previous year are re-nominated if still available under the price cap.
